History

Vushtrri or Vicianum, as it is named after the old Illyrian name, is an ancient locality, dating back to the Middle Ages, even before the Roman Empire, namely from the time of the Dardans. Viciana at the end of the first century l. K. occupied by the Roman Empire. During the Roman invasion period (I-V) Viciana had achieved considerable economic and cultural development. After the destruction of the Roman Empire, Viciana remained within Byzantium. After the separation of Christianity in 1054 in Catholicism and Orthodoxy, the majority of Viciana’s population was Catholic. In the 14th century, the Ottoman Empire began invading the Balkans and thus Vushtrri. During the XV-XVIII centuries, Vushtrri was one of the largest cities in the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and the center of the most important sanctuary of the Ottoman Empire. During the First World War, during 1915-1918, Vushtrri was conquered by Austria-Hungary. In World War II (1941-1945), Vushtrri with its surroundings belonged to the German occupied area. In November 1944, in Vushtrri / Vučitrn, the Yugoslav communist administration was set up until the armed struggle of the people of Kosovo, organized by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and NATO intervention (March-June 1999) June 17, 1999 was liberated from Serbia.
